Is Depression a Mental Illness?
Many people think that it is possible to find out whether you are suffering from depression as it is one of the most difficult mental illnesses to identify. If you have ever suffered from depression then you will know what this condition can do to your life.
When you are diagnosed with depression, you may feel anxious and worry about your future as this is often how mental illness is treated. You are usually told that if you are able to live a happy and healthy life then this is the only true cure for depression. Unfortunately this is not always the case.
It is very important to know what causes depression in order to treat it effectively. Most people think that they are suffering from this disease when they are not. There are many different reasons why people become depressed such as: having a bad relationship, the death of a loved one, financial problems, becoming too stressed out, not achieving enough success in their career etc.
When you take various tests you will find that there is a common characteristic among most people that cause them to be diagnosed as suffering from depression. This is called the symptoms of depression.
If you want to know how long it will take you to get rid of these symptoms of depression then the best advice is to take the help of a specialist. A psychiatrist or psychologist should be able to assess your symptoms and tell you what they think you are suffering from. The best way to treat this condition is to use therapy which involves identifying the cause of your depression and then finding ways to deal with the issues that are causing it.
As mentioned before, the cause of depression can vary in different things. It could be from a past relationship you were unhappy with or it could be from a current relationship that you find is no longer fulfilling.
A psychologist or psychiatrist will then be able to help you explore the different treatment options available. These treatment options include: medication, cognitive behavioural therapy, relaxation techniques, biofeedback etc.
If you are suffering from this condition then the good news is that there are many treatments out there for you. Once you have been diagnosed as suffering from depression then it is just a matter of time before you start to see the difference.
Of course these treatment options will come in various forms. There is psychotherapy which can involve psychoanalytical counselling which will look at your emotions and help to identify what the problem may be, a group therapy session where you will work with your therapist and try and work on your own together and then if you still feel that you are not improving then you can go back to seeing a psychiatrist.
Psychotherapy has a number of benefits over other types of therapy. Firstly, it is very cheap and can be carried out by trained psychotherapists. Secondly, there are no side effects to psychotherapy as long as you choose a reliable psychotherapist who is qualified to do psychotherapy.
The second type of therapy available is known as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, which involves you doing some of the work yourself and the therapist will teach you how to change your behaviour in certain situations that you are likely to experience in the future. This way you learn how to think differently to how you would otherwise think.
Biofeedback is also a form of treatment known as Neuro Linguistic Programming. In this method you will learn how to improve your brain functions. It is all based around identifying what areas of your brain are not working correctly and how you can improve those areas.
Biofeedback is another great and effective form of treatment for depression. Biofeedback helps to train you to control certain physical functions in order to improve your mental health. It can also help to correct any imbalances in your body, which could be the cause of your depression.
